The International Automotive Research Centre at the University of Warwick is at the forefront of engine testing for clients including Jaguar LandRover so we were pleased to secure yet another order resulting from our own development testing – namely a “U shaped” 3,200 amp 80 kA for 1 second rated switchboard with all circuits having remote control.
This £120k Panel and separate Power Factor Correction equipment and DC Battery Tripping Unit powers both crucial process services and also provides energy to the network by feeding back power from the test engines into a regenerative inverter system, in effect using the 11 kV site distribution network as a dynamometer, once synchronised, thereby reducing their energy costs. A G59 mains decoupling relay is incorporated into the design to meet the relevant regulations.
Space was at a premium however our negotiations at site with consultants CPW and structural engineers John Bracey Associates produced a gantry mounted solution without impinging on the Centre’s valuable floor space. Harnesses were de rigour during its installation with a large forklift. Our bespoke design produced special plinths to allow easy movement at site by providing lifting access beneath some of the one tonne sections.
